Its name( from "comparsa" carnival) alludes to the colorful groups of carnival revelers called

comparsas.

La Cumparsita was composed in 1917 by Uruguayan pianist, composer and journalist Gerardo Matos Rodriguez.

Argentine band leader and composer Robert Firpo, who at the time was in the midst of a successful residency at Montevideo cafe La Giralda. La Cumparsita was premiered at La Giralda café in Montevideo by the Argentine Orchestra of Roberto Firpo in April 19, 1917.

With the song initially composed in two sections, Firpo added a third part that included elements of his 1906 tangos, La Gaucha Manuela and Curda Completa, to give the piece a sense of unity.

“But the tango was forgotten; its later success began when the words of Enrique Maroni and Pascual Contursi were associated with it.”

Indeed, the track took on a second life in 1924 when it was sung to the lovelorn lyrics of the Argentine poets.

Since then it has become a mainstay of popular culture: Gene Kelly danced solo (tap dance and spanish dance flavor) to it in 1945 film Anchors Aweigh

Uruguay is officially honoring the 100th birthday of “La Cumparsita” in 2017, its passion for the composition is shared around the world.

‘La Cumparsita’ embodies a world of illusions and sadness, dreams and nostalgia that we only experience when we(The composer) are twenty years old.”

The title ‘La Cumparsita’ translates as "the little parade", and the first version was a tune with no lyrics.

Later, Matos Rodriguez produced a version with lyrics that begin: "The parade of endless miseries marches around that sick being who will soon die of grief."

However, the most popular version of the song is accompanied by lyrics by Pascual Contursi and is also known as "Si Supieras" ("If you knew").

The Argentine songwriting duo of Pascual Contursi and Enrique Maroni composed the most famous lines of “La Cumparista”: Desde el dia que te fuiste siento angustias en mi pecho. Deci percanta ¿que has hecho de mi pobre corazon? (“Since the day you left I’ve felt anguish in my chest. Tell me, you tramp, what have you done to my poor heart?”)

"It is a binational celebration, because both Uruguay and Argentina have the happiness to celebrate a hundred years of a composition that we have heard thousands of times, we have enjoyed it, we have made it. When a work passes the barrier of time it is because it has an important meaning and identification, "said the Minister of Culture of the City, Angel Mahler.

"This tango has already surpassed the barrier of Uruguay and

Argentina, it is known in the world," said Mahler.

This tribute unfolds together with other concerts that have the Tango as an indispensable genre in the programming of La Usina . In 2017 the 25th anniversary of the death of Astor Piazzolla is commemorated and in this context an exclusive agenda of tributes has been prepared for the great bandoneonist and composer. The plant also opens spaces for other tributes, such as the cycle of concerts offered by Pablo Aslán in his tribute to the work of Pugliese, or the work presented by Diego Schissi around the compositions of Mariano Mores. At the same time, you can enjoy the classic "Las Orquestas" cycle with the monthly concerts of the Tango Orchestra of Buenos Aires, among many other proposals that have Tango as the protagonist.

Tango was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of

Humanity by Unesco in 2009.

In April 1917 began the path of success of "La Cumparsita" in the 1920s, first Pascual Contursi and then other poets, incorporated letters. It was the work more interpreted and recorded by the ensembles, orchestras, singers and tango cancionistas throughout the twentieth century. His most famous version was played by Juan D'Arienzo , who recorded it on seven recordings.

Parallel to the celebration in Buenos Aires, in Montevideo, birthplace of "La Cumparsita" , there will be activities such as street milongas, string versions of drums and a show by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Montevideo , which will have the special participation of maestro Néstor Marconi at the Solis Theater.

About the trio Lavallén-Estigarribia-Cabarcos

It represents the meeting of three musical generations in the tango . They gathered to recreate already legendary works of the genre and to launch their own compositions with instrumental arrangements of great subtlety and inspiration.

The trio represents the encounter of three musical

generations in the tango.

Víctor Lavallén lived the success of the tango in the '50: he played the bandoneón in great orchestras like that of Osvaldo Pugliese and soon he founded the Sexteto Tango .

Horacio Cabarcos from the '60s onwards was forging his own style in the execution of the double bass , instrument with which he was designing new sonorous contributions for orchestras like that of Leopoldo Federico .

Pablo Estigarribia , started as a tango pianist in the XXI century, has already traveled the way of arranging and orchestral conducting and has also given special attention to solo piano.
